Mexican authorities have arrested a nephew of imprisoned drug kingpin Joaquin Guzman during a security operation in northern Mexico, officials confirmed on Tuesday, May 26.
The suspect, identified only as Isai “N” in accordance with Mexican legal practices regarding criminal suspects, was detained in Sonora near the US border.
Omar Garcia Harfuch, one of Mexico’s top security officials, announced the arrest in a statement shared on X, noting that the suspect is also wanted by authorities in the United States. Further details regarding the allegations against Isai “N” or potential extradition proceedings were not immediately disclosed.
The arrest comes as Mexican authorities continue operations targeting criminal organisations linked to Guzman, the former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel. El Chapo is currently serving a life sentence in the United States after being convicted on multiple drug trafficking charges.
