On Monday, May 27, 295 Ghanaians were successfully evacuated from South Africa to their home country.

The returnees are among the over 1000 Ghanaian nationals who had registered for voluntary exit from South AFrica following recent protests against illegal immigrants in South Africa.

300 of them were initially supposed to be flown out. According to South Africa’s Border Management Authority (BMA), five of them were denied exit because they still have pending documentation issues. The authories say one of them had sought asyllum in their country and could not leave without cancelling the application. The agency said the second person had expired passport and did not obtain an Emergency Travel Certificate from his embassy while the third person attempted to fly with two of her sister’s children without presenting any letter of authorization from her sister.

The returnees arrived the OR Thambo International Airport in Ghana with mixed feelings. While some thanked God for their safe return, others expressed sadness that they had to walk away South Africa empty handed after many years of builing their lives and businesses in the country.
