My Mother Sold Akara and Oranges, I Carried Bananas on a Tray on My Head to the Market in Jos — Sunday Dare

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, has reflected on his humble upbringing, recounting how his mother’s petty trading helped finance his education and shaped his future.

Speaking in a video shared by Mic On Podcast, Dare said his mother sold akara, bananas, and oranges in Jos, Plateau State, while he assisted by carrying bananas on a tray to the market.

“Whoever I am today, my mother sold akara. Whoever I am today, my mother sold bananas. I carried bananas on a tray on my head to the market in Jos, Plateau State. My mother sold oranges, and through that, they were able to train me,” he said.

Dare said his family’s experience demonstrates the value of hard work, perseverance, and parental sacrifice in creating opportunities despite limited resources.

His remarks have sparked discussions on social media, with many Nigerians describing his story as an example of resilience and the dignity of honest labour, while encouraging young people to remain focused on their goals and appreciate the sacrifices made by parents and guardians.
