Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has blamed human greed, negligence, and the reckless exploitation of natural resources for the worsening global climate crisis, saying these actions have disrupted the natural balance of the environment.
According to a Daily Post report published on Sunday, June 28, 2026, Obasanjo made the remarks in Kano while speaking at an event on the Environment and Sustainability Initiative and Trust Fund. He said the initiative was established to strengthen environmental protection and ecological preservation, adding that the Trust Fund was named after former Nigerian Bar Association President Abubakar Mahmoud in recognition of his leadership and public service.
“God created the world in harmony, but through our greed, carelessness and reckless exploitation of nature, we have done more harm than good,” Obasanjo said.
He urged governments, organisations, and individuals to prioritise responsible use of natural resources and intensify conservation efforts. Obasanjo also disclosed that he has planted more than 3.5 million trees as part of his commitment to environmental sustainability, describing tree planting as a practical way to combat climate change and restore degraded ecosystems.
