One person was killed and several others injured after a commercial vehicle struck a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) allegedly planted by bandits along the Kurawa–Sabon Birni Road in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
According to a Punch report published on Monday, June 29, 2026, the incident occurred on Sunday as the vehicle was transporting passengers from neighbouring communities to Sabon Birni town. Security analyst Bashir Altine Guyawa said the explosive device was allegedly planted by loyalists of a notorious bandit leader operating in the area.
The blast severely damaged the vehicle, killing one passenger and leaving several others with varying degrees of injuries. Residents and road users rushed to rescue those trapped before emergency responders arrived.
“The vehicle was badly damaged, and people were crying for help as residents tried to rescue the victims,” an eyewitness said.
The injured were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment, while the deceased was recovered from the wreckage. As of the time of the report, the Sokoto State Police Command had not issued an official statement, and attempts to reach Police Public Relations Officer DSP Ahmad Rufai were unsuccessful. Authorities are expected to investigate the incident.
