The Govt Must Not Make the Mistake of Believing That Bandits Will Genuinely Repent – Islamic Cleric

Ondo State-based Islamic cleric and founder of the At-Tanzil Foundation, Sheikh AbdulRauf Lagbaji, has cautioned the government against relying on the rehabilitation of repentant bandits as a strategy for addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.

According to a Punch report published on Monday, June 29, 2026, Lagbaji made the remarks during a lecture at the Ashura Day celebration organised by the Muslim Media Practitioners of Nigeria in Akure.

“The government must not make the mistake of believing that bandits will genuinely repent and spare them,” he said, arguing that returning convicted criminals to society after claims of repentance could endanger innocent citizens and embolden criminal groups.

The cleric urged governments to prioritise justice, accountability, and deterrence by ensuring convicted kidnappers and bandits receive prompt punishment in accordance with the law. He also called for constitutional and legal reforms to strengthen the fight against insecurity.

Lagbaji further appealed to lawyers to avoid representing individuals facing banditry and kidnapping charges, saying everyone has a role in combating insecurity. He also encouraged Nigerians, particularly Muslims, to uphold the values of peace, patience, and good conduct as lessons from Ashura.
