State Police in Nigeria, It’s Very Important and Critical, We Are Lacking Boots on the Ground — Sani

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has renewed his call for the creation of state police, arguing that decentralised policing is essential to tackling Nigeria’s growing security challenges.

Speaking during an interview reported by Arise News on July 1, Sani said Nigeria lacks sufficient security personnel, leaving many areas inadequately policed and vulnerable to criminal activities.

“State police in Nigeria, it’s very important, it’s very critical. Because the only solution is the creation of state police. We are lacking boots on the ground. And that is the reason why today in Nigeria we have a lot of ungoverned spaces. The issue of security has to do with intelligence sharing and gathering, and you have to know the terrain,” he said.

Sani argued that effective policing depends on local knowledge, intelligence gathering and close community engagement, making state police a practical solution to improving security.

The governor also cautioned politicians against politicising judicial decisions, saying public confidence in the judiciary is vital to Nigeria’s democracy. He urged political actors to remain consistent in their respect for court rulings rather than supporting or criticising the judiciary based on whether judgments favour their interests.
