Senegal’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign ended in dramatic fashion after surrendering a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 to Belgium in the Round of 32, according to Flashscore.
The Lions of Teranga took control through goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr, while Sadio Mané, Iliman Ndiaye, Ismail Jakobs, Papa Gueye and Idrissa Gana Gueye dominated much of the contest. However, Belgium mounted a late comeback to force extra time before securing victory to reach the Round of 16.
The turning point came after Senegal coach Pape Thiaw substituted several of his standout performers, including Diarra, Ndiaye and Papa Gueye. The changes reduced Senegal’s attacking threat, weakened their control of midfield and allowed Belgium to dominate the closing stages.
Belgium capitalised through late goals from Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans to force extra time, before Tielemans converted a penalty to complete the comeback.
While Belgium earned praise for their resilience, many supporters and analysts believe Senegal’s late tactical changes and poor game management after taking a two-goal lead played a decisive role in the defeat.
