Former Vice President and ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has explained his warning that nothing should happen to former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
According to a statement reported by Vanguard on July 9, 2026, Atiku said every Nigerian, regardless of political affiliation, is entitled to personal safety, self-determination and peaceful coexistence under the law.
His remarks followed concerns raised by Obi, who recently alleged that his life was under threat. They also come amid controversy surrounding the detention of El-Rufai over allegations of public fund mismanagement, with some observers describing the case as politically motivated.
Atiku stressed that both men deserve the protection guaranteed by democracy and the Constitution, warning against actions that could undermine political freedoms or intimidate opposition figures.
Explaining his position, he cited an African proverb, saying: “When the drums of injustice beat for your neighbour, do not dance, for tomorrow they may beat for you.”
He added that every Nigerian has a responsibility to defend democratic space, insisting that protecting the rights and safety of political opponents is essential for a healthy democracy.
