Nigerian singer Qdot has revealed that he no longer identifies with Islam, explaining why he embraced the Isese tradition.
According to The Nation, Qdot made the disclosure amid growing public discussions about entertainers openly identifying with African Traditional Religion. The report also highlighted veteran singer 9ice’s recent public affirmation of his commitment to Ifa philosophy and African traditional religion.
At the listening session for his 13-track album, 9ice said he had been a Babalawo for more than 18 years but kept it private for fear of being stigmatized. He added that the annual Odun Ifa celebration is a period of thanksgiving and spiritual guidance, and that his new album reflects the beliefs that guide his life.
Qdot, known for incorporating Yoruba culture and Islamic elements, including Quranic recitations, into some of his songs, said he had already left Islam.
“I had since left Islam. How would some Islamic radicals be killing innocent souls and no single Islamic leader is condemning it? That means they are happy,” he said.
His remarks have generated widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians debating spirituality, religion, and cultural identity.
