Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has expressed concern over what he described as growing disrespect toward some of Nigeria’s founding leaders, particularly the late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe.
Speaking in a video shared by Creative TV on Wednesday, July 15, Sani said it is uncommon to hear young Hausa people insult prominent northern leaders such as Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa or Sir Ahmadu Bello. He contrasted this with what he described as frequent criticism of Azikiwe by some younger Nigerians.
“You hardly see a Hausa man insulting Tafawa Balewa or even Sir Ahmadu Bello. You hardly see them. But you see a young boy who was just born in 2002; he will start insulting Nnamdi Azikiwe,” Sani said.
According to the former lawmaker, Azikiwe, widely known as “Zik of Africa,” remains one of Nigeria’s most internationally recognized political figures and played a significant role in Africa’s struggle for independence.
Sani argued that the late statesman should be remembered for his contributions to Nigeria and the continent rather than being subjected to insults.
His remarks were made while reflecting on the legacy of Nigeria’s founding leaders and the importance of preserving respect for historical figures who contributed to the country’s political development.
