In a recent interview with The Sun on Saturday, May 9, 2026, founder of the Igbo Youth Movement, Elliot Uko, shared his views on Nigeria’s political future ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly focusing on the implications of a possible defeat for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Uko suggested that if political forces succeed in removing Tinubu from office, the development would significantly reshape political power dynamics in the country. According to him, such an outcome would go beyond an ordinary democratic transition and could alter how political influence and authority are perceived in Nigeria.
He stated that any group capable of defeating a sitting president would gain considerable influence and long-term political recognition. In his view, it would send a powerful message across the country’s political landscape and strengthen the standing of those involved in the effort.
The activist also observed that political competition ahead of the 2027 elections has already intensified, with major political actors becoming deeply invested in the struggle for power. He explained that the level of engagement now suggests that many politicians and alliances are fully committed to the contest and may find it difficult to withdraw from the battle midway.
According to Uko, the current atmosphere reflects a serious political confrontation that could shape Nigeria’s future direction for years to come. He warned that political rivalries and alliances are becoming more entrenched as the election season gradually approaches.
Speaking during the interview, he said, “If they succeed and remove Tinubu, they will be feared and respected. The fear of the North will become the beginning of wisdom. They have stepped into the ring now. They can’t go back. The APC isn’t my party.”
