Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has responded after a Nigerian offered to pay the ₦25,000 penalty issued over the airport parking incident involving former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.
The offer came from Nnaemeka Ikerionwu, who, in an open letter, asked Keyamo to provide the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) account details so he could settle the fine. Ikerionwu said he appreciated the minister’s release of CCTV footage from the July 4 incident at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, describing it as helpful in clarifying what transpired. He added that paying the fine would ensure FAAN received the required payment promptly.
He also appealed to Keyamo to pardon Obi and advised the former Anambra State governor to avoid situations that could lead to similar public disputes.
Responding on his official X account, Keyamo directed Ikerionwu to visit FAAN’s Director of Commercial and Business Development for guidance on completing the payment.
The minister also criticized Obi’s earlier claims that he was being deliberately targeted at Nigerian airports, arguing that the CCTV footage contradicted those allegations. He urged public figures to avoid making accusations without evidence and said Nigerians were becoming less receptive to what he described as politically motivated narratives.
The airport parking incident continues to generate public debate, with Obi maintaining he was treated unfairly, while the Federal Government insists airport authorities acted in accordance with established regulations and procedures.
