Burkina Faso’s President Ibrahim Traore has declared that his government will not permit the implementation of Sharia law, insisting the country’s existing legal system will remain in place while protecting freedom of religion.
According to a Daily Post report published on Monday, July 20, 2026, Traore made the remarks during a nationwide broadcast on religion, education and national development.
“I am a Muslim, but everyone in Burkina Faso has the right to practice their own religion. There will never be Sharia law in this country,” he said.
Traore also questioned the value of citizens travelling to Saudi Arabia to study Sharia law, arguing that Burkina Faso needs more professionals trained in science, technology, engineering and other technical fields that can support economic growth and national development.
The president further stated that students who choose to study Sharia law abroad should not expect to return to Burkina Faso after completing their studies, maintaining that the country requires practical skills and innovation rather than expertise in a religious legal system.
His remarks underscored his administration’s commitment to religious freedom while prioritizing education and skills development as key drivers of the country’s progress.
