Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has apologised to the Igbo community for the role played by people from the state during the Nigerian Civil War, describing the gesture as part of efforts to promote reconciliation and strengthen inter-ethnic relations.
According to a Daily Post report on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, Mutfwang made the remarks during a meeting with representatives of the Igbo community from the 17 local government areas of Plateau State at the Government House in Jos.
The governor acknowledged the painful legacy of the civil war, saying many who participated acted under the leadership and circumstances of the time. He urged both communities to focus on healing, unity and shared development rather than past divisions.
“I apologise to the Igbos. We were deceived into going to war, and we regret it. No ethnic group has demonstrated the entrepreneurial spirit more than the Igbo. I encourage you to replicate that same spirit in Plateau. I also appeal to Igbo business owners to employ and train young Plateau indigenes,” Mutfwang said.
He added that the long-standing relationship between Plateau residents and the Igbo community makes continued cooperation essential for the state’s future.
