Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has reportedly urged club president Florentino Perez to make Manchester City midfielder Rodri a priority signing during the summer transfer window.
According to Madrid Universal on Thursday, July 23, 2026, the Spanish club has shifted its focus to Rodri after encountering difficulties in its pursuit of Bayern Munich forward Michael Olise, with the German champions reportedly unwilling to negotiate.
Despite previous concerns over Rodri’s age and long-term value, Mourinho is said to believe the Spain international would immediately strengthen the squad. MARCA reported that the Portuguese coach has personally asked Perez to make every effort to complete the transfer.
Rodri enhanced his reputation after playing a key role in Spain’s World Cup triumph alongside Fabian Ruiz, earning the tournament’s Golden Ball for his performances. His composure, defensive awareness and passing ability were instrumental in Spain’s success.
Real Madrid’s main reservation remains the midfielder’s age, as the club has prioritized younger recruits. However, Rodri is viewed as a potential successor to the leadership and midfield control lost following Toni Kroos’ retirement.
Rodri’s Manchester City contract expires at the end of next season, a situation that could lower his transfer fee if negotiations begin this summer, although City are reportedly working to extend his deal.
