It Is Noteworthy That Tinubu Has Cautioned Govs Against Using Public Resources to Build Flyovers — Obi

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has said President Bola Tinubu’s reported caution to state governors against spending public funds on unnecessary flyovers aligns with a position he has consistently advocated.

In a post on his official X account on Saturday, August 1, 2026, Obi welcomed the reported advice that governors should avoid committing scarce resources to constructing flyovers in areas with little traffic while more pressing developmental needs remain unmet. He argued that governments should prioritise rehabilitating existing infrastructure and completing ongoing projects before embarking on new ones.

“It is therefore noteworthy that President Bola Tinubu has now cautioned state governors against committing scarce public resources to constructing unnecessary flyovers in areas with little traffic while neglecting more pressing developmental needs,” Obi wrote.

However, Obi said the same principle should apply to the Federal Government, arguing that some ongoing federal projects could be regarded as unrealistic or “white elephant” projects while many major highways and existing infrastructure remain in poor condition.

Drawing on his tenure as Anambra State governor, Obi said his administration prioritised completing viable inherited projects, maintaining that governance should be judged by the usefulness and completion of projects rather than who initiated them.
