Cardinal John Onaiyekan has disclosed that Christian leaders and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed differing views during a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on the state of the nation and the economy.
Speaking in a video published on the Arise News YouTube channel on July 31, 2026, Onaiyekan said the delegation informed the president that many Nigerians were facing significant economic hardship and that conditions in the country were not improving.
According to him, President Tinubu disagreed with their assessment and maintained a different position on the state of the economy.
“That is the kind of reality we painted and it’s not the kind of thing he wanted to hear and his reply was very clear. We left that hall knowing that we said what we had to say and he said what he had to say,” Onaiyekan said.
He explained that the meeting gave the Christian leaders an opportunity to present their concerns directly to the president, despite the differences in their views on the country’s economic situation.
