Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has defended his approach to politics, arguing that he should not be judged by the standards of his late father, who was a gospel preacher.
According to a Daily Post report published on Sunday, August 2, 2026, Wike made the remarks during a media chat in Port Harcourt, where he said politics and religious ministry are guided by different principles.
To illustrate his position, Wike cited his own family, stressing that a person’s profession is not determined by that of their parents.
“I am a lawyer but my second son is not a lawyer, so because his mother is a judge, does that make my son a judge?” he said.
Wike maintained that every profession has its own code of conduct, adding that politicians must operate within the realities of politics while pastors are expected to uphold the principles of Christian ministry.
His comments came amid criticism over his continued involvement in Rivers State politics during his prolonged political dispute with Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Wike insisted his actions should be assessed within the context of politics rather than religion.
