A 16-year-old girl who was r@ped and impregnated by her grandfather, Musa Gado, has given birth to a baby boy in Niger State.
The paternity of the newborn child was confirmed after a DNA test was conducted.
After the teenager became pregnant, the grandfather allegedly convinced her to abort the pregnancy.
She attempted to do so by taking some drugs and injections, but the attempt was unsuccessful.
The pregnant girl eventually reported to the office of the Child Rights Protection and Enforcement Agency, where she was kept in protective custody until she delivered a baby boy.
Director-General of the agency, Barrister Uma Mohammed, who confirmed the development to Punch on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, said the mother and her newborn baby are still in the agency’s custody.
“We are here today because of a 16-year-old girl whose grandfather slept with her. This case was reported at the agency on October 5, 2025, by the girl’s father, Lawali Baba, and the Mai Angwa,” he said.
“They brought the case of the girl to the agency. When she came, she said she was pregnant and was already six months along. We conducted medical checks and took her to the hospital. She has been under the custody of the agency since then because we needed to protect her and her unborn child.
“They attempted to abort the pregnancy. As I said earlier, we are here to protect the interest of the child, which is paramount. She remained with the agency until she gave birth in December 2025. During that time, we agreed with all parties, including the alleged perpetrator, that the only way to establish the truth was through a DNA test, and everyone consented.
“The alleged perpetrator agreed to bear the cost of the DNA test, which was N500,000. It was conducted at a hospital in Gwagwalada.
“After she gave birth, we waited until both the mother and the baby were strong enough before conducting the test. It took five weeks for the result to be ready, and it confirmed that the grandfather is the father of the baby.
“The result showed a 99.999 per cent probability. After receiving the report, the next step was to forward the case to the police for investigation. The suspect is currently in police custody at the CID, and the matter will be taken to court for prosecution,” she said.
The spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed to the publication on Tuesday that the grandfather had been arrested for impregnating his granddaughter, adding that the case is still under investigation.
“The case was reported to the police command, and a DNA test was conducted. The Child Rights Agency is handling the case, while the police are investigating and will prosecute the suspect. Musa Gado is currently in custody, undergoing investigation,” Abiodun said.
