2027: We believe this is the man that can lead us into our destiny in this country – Sergius Ogun

Former House of Representatives member and National Democratic Congress (NDC) chieftain, Sergius Ogun, has expressed confidence in the leadership qualities of NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi, saying many Nigerians see him as the individual capable of transforming the nation.

Speaking during an interview on SYMFONI’s Niger Unfiltered, Ogun defended the growing support base around Peter Obi, arguing that the enthusiasm among supporters is driven by a desire for good governance rather than political patronage.

According to him, the movement backing Peter Obi is largely organic and consists of citizens who have become convinced that the country requires a different style of leadership.

Responding to criticisms that supporters of the former Anambra State governor display excessive loyalty, Ogun said their commitment stems from a belief that Nigeria needs a leader with integrity, accountability and a clear vision for national development.

He stated, “We believe this is the man that can lead us into our destiny in this country.”

The former lawmaker noted that many of Peter Obi’s supporters are volunteers who dedicate their time and resources without expecting financial rewards in return. He contrasted this with traditional political mobilization, where crowds are often assembled through financial inducements.

Ogun argued that the support enjoyed by Peter Obi is a reflection of widespread dissatisfaction with the current state of the country and a growing demand for political change.

He maintained that Peter Obi’s record in public office continues to attract Nigerians from different regions and backgrounds, including professionals, students and ordinary citizens seeking reforms in governance.

According to him, supporters are drawn not only by Peter Obi’s campaign promises but also by what they perceive as a history of prudent management and public accountability.

The NDC chieftain further dismissed claims that Peter Obi lacks the leadership capacity required to govern a complex nation like Nigeria. Instead, he described him as a leader who understands the country’s challenges because of his consistent engagement with citizens across various communities.

Ogun said Peter Obi’s frequent visits to educational institutions, healthcare facilities and internally displaced persons’ camps demonstrate a commitment to understanding the realities facing Nigerians.

Looking ahead to the 2027 general election, he expressed optimism that voters would rally behind Peter Obi and the NDC’s message of reform and accountability.

He also urged party members and supporters to remain focused on the larger goal of building a broad coalition capable of challenging the ruling party at the polls.

According to Ogun, the growing momentum around Peter Obi reflects a national yearning for leadership that prioritizes transparency, development and the welfare of ordinary citizens.
