Pastor Jerry Kegi Hamilton, a former instrumentalist in the late Fela Kuti’s band, has recounted an alleged encounter with a police officer who warned him to stay away from Fela’s Shrine.
Speaking in an interview with Rufai Oseni on Nevon HQ, Hamilton said the incident occurred while he was standing outside the Shrine with a female companion.
According to him, a police officer approached and advised him to leave the area immediately. When he asked why, the officer allegedly revealed that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) at Area F had instructed officers to kill him if he was arrested.
Hamilton said he was shocked by the claim and questioned what offence he had committed to warrant such treatment.
He alleged that the officer explained that many young men arrested for various crimes in Ikeja often mentioned his name during interrogations, claiming he had sent them.
Recalling the conversation, Hamilton said: “One day I was standing in front of the Shrine with one of my girlfriends. A policeman came and said, ‘Kegi, you need to leave the Shrine.’ I said why? He said, ‘The DPO in Area F said the next time we arrest you, we should waste you.’”
The pastor did not indicate when the incident occurred, but presented it as part of his experiences during his association with the Shrine and the late Afrobeat icon’s circle.
