2026 World Cup: FIFA Hands Madibo Five-Match Ban

FIFA has imposed a five-match suspension on Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo following a dangerous tackle during the ongoing 2026 World Cup, according to a report by Daily Post on June 25, 2026.

Madibo was sent off during Qatar’s group-stage defeat after a challenge on Canada midfielder Ismael Kone. Following a review, FIFA’s disciplinary committee ruled that the incident constituted serious foul play and warranted an extended ban.

The tackle left Kone with fractures to both the tibia and fibula in his left leg. The Canadian international, who plays for US Sassuolo, received immediate medical treatment and later underwent surgery in Vancouver.

As a result of the suspension, Madibo will miss the remainder of Qatar’s group-stage matches and additional fixtures, depending on the team’s progress in the tournament. FIFA confirmed that the player has the right to appeal the decision.

Reports also indicate that Madibo visited Kone in hospital following the incident to offer support as the injured midfielder begins his recovery.

The ruling represents one of the most significant disciplinary actions of the tournament so far and underscores FIFA’s emphasis on player safety and the punishment of dangerous conduct on the field.
