Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, has defended the administration’s performance in the power sector, arguing that electricity generation capacity has improved under the current government.
According to a Daily Post report published on June 24, 2026, Onanuga said the Tinubu administration has implemented measures aimed at increasing electricity generation and improving power supply across the country. He maintained that progress has been made despite ongoing challenges in the sector.
The presidential aide also responded to comments attributed to Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, who had pledged to generate 10,000 megawatts of electricity if elected president in 2027.
“What the people don’t know is that, which Peter Obi didn’t know, when he came and said he’s going to generate 10,000 megawatts, we already have in Nigeria, installed capacity of 13,500 megawatts,” Onanuga said.
He explained that Nigeria’s installed generation capacity currently stands at about 13,500 megawatts and noted that the figure has increased during the Tinubu administration.
However, Onanuga acknowledged that challenges remain in converting installed capacity into actual electricity generation and distribution. He identified inadequate gas supply, partly linked to longstanding debts owed to gas suppliers, as a major constraint affecting the sector’s performance.
He said the government is working to address these structural issues and improve electricity delivery nationwide.
