Mall Collapsed: My Friend Is Dead Inside There. He Was About Running Out When a Block Hit Him — Witness

A witness has recounted the death of a friend following the collapse of a three-storey shopping complex at Oluti Bus Stop along Old Ojo Road in the Alakija area of Lagos State.

According to a report by Vanguard on June 25, 2026, the building collapse claimed one life, while at least 15 people, including children and infants, were rescued from the rubble. Emergency responders from the police, fire service, military and Lagos State emergency agencies continued search and rescue operations for others believed to be trapped.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as the structure suddenly gave way, with some residents reporting loud noises before the collapse and others saying they could hear voices beneath the debris.

“My friend is dead inside there. He was about running out when a block hit him. There are casualties,” one witness said.

Some residents alleged the building had shown signs of structural weakness, including visible cracks, and claimed it had previously been marked for evacuation over safety concerns.

Those rescued and injured were taken to Navy Town Hospital in Alakija for treatment, while rescue efforts continued as anxious relatives awaited news of missing loved ones.
