“I Think I Started Creating Comedy for Me, Then It Found People. I Didn’t Create It for People” — Wasabi

AMVCA-winning skitmaker Layi Wasabi has said he never set out to become an “intellectual comedian,” explaining that the label was created by audiences rather than by his own intention.

According to a report by The Nation on June 26, 2026, the comedian, whose real name is Isaac Ayomide Olayiwola, made the remarks during the Joey Akan Experience podcast while reflecting on his career and creative journey.

Wasabi said he discovered his talent through stand-up performances while in school, where positive reactions from fellow students encouraged him to pursue comedy more seriously.

He explained that he focused on creating content that reflected his personality instead of trying to fit a particular style or appeal to a specific audience. According to him, viewers later described his work as intellectual comedy, a label he appreciates but says has raised expectations for every performance.

“I didn’t go with the intention. I think I started creating comedy for me. Then it found people. I didn’t create comedy for people,” Wasabi said.

He added that authenticity has always guided his creative process, with his popularity growing naturally as audiences connected with his work.
