If 60% Of Nigerians Meet Peter Obi Today, 50% Will Go Back Agreeing With Him—Chief Peter Ameh Says

Chief Peter Ameh, a chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed confidence in the public appeal of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, saying direct interactions with the former Labour Party presidential candidate would persuade many Nigerians to support his ideas and leadership style.

Ameh made the remarks during an interview aired on the official YouTube channel of SYMFONI on Friday, June 26, 2026, while discussing Nigeria’s political landscape and the prospects of opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general election.

Speaking about Obi’s popularity, Ameh argued that the former governor has a unique ability to connect with ordinary Nigerians through direct engagement and conversations focused on governance, accountability, and national development.

According to him, “I am telling you that if 60% of Nigerians meet Peter Obi today, and if they have no premeditated decision already taken before arriving, 50% of them will go back agreeing with him.”

The political strategist attributed Obi’s appeal to what he described as the former governor’s willingness to engage citizens honestly and explain his positions on national issues in a straightforward manner.

Ameh maintained that many Nigerians are increasingly looking beyond traditional political considerations and are paying greater attention to the competence, integrity, and performance records of those seeking public office.

He argued that direct interaction allows voters to assess political leaders based on their ideas and policy proposals rather than relying solely on public perception or partisan narratives.

According to Ameh, Peter Obi has remained one of the country’s most prominent opposition figures because of his continued involvement in national conversations on governance, economic reforms, fiscal responsibility, and accountability in public office.

He suggested that Obi’s consistent advocacy for prudent management of public resources and institutional reforms has resonated with many Nigerians who are concerned about the country’s economic challenges.

The NDC chieftain also observed that there is growing public demand for transparent leadership and practical solutions to issues such as unemployment, inflation, insecurity, and poverty.

According to him, this shift in public expectations is changing Nigeria’s political landscape, with more voters placing emphasis on character, competence, and credibility rather than ethnic identity, regional affiliations, or traditional party loyalty.

Ameh said the electorate has become increasingly critical of campaign promises and now expects politicians to present measurable policy proposals capable of addressing the country’s pressing challenges.

He argued that the political environment ahead of future elections will be shaped largely by candidates’ ability to convince Nigerians that they possess the vision and capacity to deliver meaningful reforms.

The strategist further stated that grassroots engagement remains one of the most effective ways for political leaders to build trust with citizens and communicate their plans directly without relying exclusively on media campaigns.
