DJ Switch Slams First Lady Remi Tinubu Over Advice to Poor Nigerians to Start ‘Akara, Kuli-Kuli’ Business

Nigerian activist and disc jockey DJ Switch has criticised First Lady Oluremi Tinubu over her advice urging impoverished Nigerians to consider small-scale businesses such as selling akara, roasted corn and kuli-kuli.

According to a report by Linda Ikeji’s Blog, the First Lady made the remarks during a press briefing while defending the Federal Government’s economic intervention programmes. She said financial grants had been distributed to many Nigerians as part of efforts to reduce poverty and promote grassroots economic empowerment.

Reacting to the comments, DJ Switch argued that the recommendation reflects an outdated approach to economic development. She said Nigeria should focus on equipping citizens with digital and technology-driven skills rather than encouraging low-income subsistence trading.

The activist, who gained international attention during the 2020 #EndSARS protests through her live-stream coverage, maintained that countries seeking long-term economic growth are investing in innovation and digital opportunities for their citizens.

DJ Switch’s reaction has added to the public debate surrounding the government’s approach to poverty alleviation and economic empowerment.
