SA: “They’re So Jealous Because We’re Hardworking, They Always Tell Us to Leave or Be Killed” — Returnee

A Nigerian returnee from South Africa, identified as Emmanuela, has alleged that Nigerians face increasing hostility and threats in the country, following her evacuation amid a renewed wave of xenophobic attacks.

Speaking after arriving in Nigeria with hundreds of other evacuees under a Federal Government evacuation programme, Emmanuela said many Nigerians were forced to abandon their businesses, investments and personal belongings to escape the violence.

“They are so jealous because Nigerians are hardworking and enterprising, so they feel threatened. They constantly tell us to leave or be killed. My life was no longer safe, so I had to leave. I left everything behind in South Africa,” she said.

Emmanuela also claimed that many Nigerians face difficulties obtaining legal residency permits despite applying through the appropriate channels, worsening their situation.

She urged Nigerians considering relocating to South Africa to reconsider, saying many now live in fear because of recurring xenophobic attacks and threats to their safety.
