‘If Obi Has Any Issue With Tinubu’s Credentials, Why Can’t He Wait Until After the 2027 Election?’ – Yusuf

Lawyer and public affairs analyst Barrister Buhari Yusuf has criticised former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi’s demand regarding President Bola Tinubu’s credentials, arguing that such issues should be resolved through constitutional and legal processes.

Speaking during an interview on Trust TV, Yusuf said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) does not have the legal authority to grant the request Obi is seeking.

“Why can’t Peter Obi wait if he has any issue with Tinubu’s credentials until after the 2027 election, or go to court, or simply ask for a constitutional amendment to make it law? But we’re asking INEC, and he knows that INEC doesn’t have the right to do that. I think he’s just playing to the gallery,” Yusuf said.

He maintained that disputes over a presidential candidate’s qualifications or credentials should be addressed through the courts or by pursuing constitutional amendments, rather than making demands outside INEC’s statutory powers.

Yusuf added that adherence to established legal procedures is essential to preserving public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process and the rule of law.
