Fifty days after 42 pupils and education workers were abducted from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, hopes for their rescue remain alive despite growing uncertainty over the prolonged operation.
According to Vanguard, the victims were kidnapped on May 15, 2026, and taken into the Old Oyo National Park, where intelligence reports indicate they are being held by suspected Boko Haram fighters using the dense forest and tunnel-like terrain as cover.
Security sources said troops have achieved “operational containment” by restricting insurgents’ movements but have been unable to launch a decisive rescue because the captives are reportedly being used as human shields. Authorities also cited improvised explosive devices, difficult terrain and the abductors’ frequent relocation of hostages as major challenges.
The kidnappers are reportedly demanding the release of two senior Boko Haram commanders, a request the Federal Government has rejected.
The crisis has displaced residents, disrupted farming and education, and isolated affected communities. Schools remain closed, while security officials insist operations will continue until the abducted children and teachers are safely rescued.
