Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who represents Abia North Senatorial District, says the National Assembly will ensure the proposed State Police Bill contains safeguards to prevent abuse of the system by state governments.
According to a Daily Post report published on Friday, July 3, 2026, Kalu acknowledged public concerns that governors could misuse state police powers but said lawmakers and the executive would address those issues before the bill becomes law.
“No, we are going to take care of all those clauses where anybody could abuse the State Police. We are going to look at the Bill to make sure they are favourable to Nigerians,” Kalu said.
He added that the legislation would define the roles, responsibilities and relationship between the Federal Police Service and state police forces while establishing clear accountability measures. Kalu noted that the bill must still pass through both chambers of the National Assembly and receive executive approval before it becomes law.
The senator also said insecurity remains the biggest obstacle to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reform agenda. He urged APC members in Abia State to remain united ahead of the 2027 general elections and work toward the re-election of the president and other party candidates.
