Political analyst Henry Shield has criticised Nigeria’s opposition parties, accusing them of lacking urgency and strategic direction ahead of the 2027 general election.
Speaking in comments reported by Symfoni News on Saturday, July 4, 2026, Shield argued that opposition parties should be mobilising citizens to demand free, fair and credible elections rather than focusing solely on winning votes.
He said the opposition should increase public pressure on the government before the polls, insisting that electoral credibility should become a major public issue in the months leading to the election.
“With only six months to go until the election, take a look at the country’s opposition parties. They’re the most uninteresting, unmotivated bunch you’ll ever meet,” Shield said, adding that opposition leaders appeared too comfortable in their roles.
According to Shield, opposition parties have devoted more energy to internal reassurance than grassroots mobilisation. He argued that stronger public engagement and sustained pressure on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) would better demonstrate political resolve and reinforce democratic accountability before the 2027 elections.
