Former President Goodluck Jonathan has denied a report alleging he was offered ₦500 billion to contest against the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to split votes in the South-South.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, Jonathan’s Special Adviser on Media, Dr Ikechukwu Eze, described the report as “entirely false and baseless” and urged Nigerians to disregard it.
Eze said the publication, which he described as originating from a “little-known website,” falsely attributed the claim to the former president without providing any evidence or details of where and when the alleged statement was made or who purportedly made the offer.
He argued that the report failed to meet basic journalistic standards and bore “all the hallmarks of fake news” designed to mislead the public and draw Jonathan into unnecessary political controversy.
While noting that misinformation often increases during election periods, Eze urged Nigerians to verify sensational political claims before sharing them and to disregard the publication in its entirety.
