Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central, has accused former Borno State Governor Ali Modu Sheriff of attempting to stir negative sentiment against Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi in Northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Channels Television on Tuesday, Umeh dismissed Sheriff’s remarks on Politics Today, where the former governor described Obi as “divisive” and claimed Northern voters would reject him in 2027. Sheriff argued that the political landscape had changed since the 2023 election, despite Obi’s strong showing in states including Nasarawa and Plateau.
Umeh said Nigeria had moved beyond politics based on division and sectional interests, insisting that voters now prioritize leadership and national development. He described Obi as one of Nigeria’s finest politicians, praising his commitment to peace, unity, and national rebuilding.
The lawmaker also defended Obi’s criticism of the current administration, saying every politician has the constitutional right to assess a government’s performance. “He has a right to say the president has not met the expectations of the Nigerian people. It is politically allowed to say resign because the current president asked Jonathan to resign when he was in office,” Umeh said.
