The Allied People’s Movement (APM) has called on the Federal Government to publicly account for funds generated from the removal of petrol subsidy, arguing that Nigerians have yet to see the promised benefits despite the policy’s implementation.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, the party recalled that President Bola Tinubu announced the removal of fuel subsidy on May 29, 2023, with assurances that the savings would be used to improve citizens’ welfare, security and the economy.
APM claimed that more than ₦20 trillion has accrued from the policy over the past three years but alleged that living conditions have continued to deteriorate. The party said the removal of the subsidy contributed to petrol prices rising from below ₦200 per litre to over ₦1,500 per litre, driving increases in transport costs, food prices, school fees, rent, electricity tariffs and healthcare expenses.
The party also alleged worsening poverty, unemployment and business closures, while questioning government claims that subsidy savings are being invested in critical sectors. It urged the Federal Government to publish a comprehensive, independently verifiable report detailing total subsidy savings, funded projects, programme beneficiaries and measurable outcomes, saying Nigerians deserve full transparency on how the funds have been utilised.
