England defender Jarell Quansah has been suspended for two FIFA World Cup matches following his red card in the Round of 16 victory over Mexico, ruling him out of Saturday’s quarter-final against Norway.
Quansah was sent off during England’s 3-2 win after a challenge on Jesus Gallardo. While the dismissal carried an automatic one-match ban, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee imposed an additional match, citing serious foul play under Article 14 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
The suspension also means Quansah would miss a potential semi-final against Argentina or Switzerland on July 15 if England progress.
FIFA confirmed the ban would be served in England’s upcoming World Cup fixtures in accordance with Article 69 of its disciplinary regulations. The Football Association was reportedly considering an appeal after FIFA overturned the suspension of United States forward Folarin Balogun but upheld and extended Quansah’s ban.
England manager Thomas Tuchel questioned FIFA’s disciplinary consistency after the Mexico match. Meanwhile, Declan Rice, Marc Guehi, Nico O’Reilly and Jude Bellingham are one booking away from suspension, with another yellow card against Norway ruling them out of a potential semi-final.
