New Chelsea Boss Xabi Alonso Is Wrong About Where Chelsea Need to Strengthen This Summer

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso reportedly wants the club to sign another striker before the summer transfer window closes, but The Chelsea Chronicle argues that defensive reinforcements should take priority.

The report notes that Chelsea have already signed Marco Palestra, Geovany Quenda and Emmanuel Emegha this summer. However, the departure of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid has left the Blues needing a replacement at left-back.

Chelsea are also considered well-stocked in attack. João Pedro scored 15 goals and provided four assists in 35 appearances last season to establish himself as the club’s first-choice striker. Nicolas Jackson has returned from his loan spell at Bayern Munich, while new signing Emmanuel Emegha is expected to compete for a place in Alonso’s squad. Even if Liam Delap departs after an underwhelming first season, the report suggests Chelsea would still have sufficient options up front.

According to The Chelsea Chronicle, Chelsea should instead focus on strengthening the left side of their defence, while also adding depth in midfield and defence ahead of a campaign in multiple competitions. The report concludes that another striker should only be pursued if a world-class opportunity becomes available.
