Rev. Ladi Thompson, Director of Peace and Security for the African Union (AU) 6th Region, has alleged that individuals associated with the political movement that brought former President Muhammadu Buhari to power in 2015 admitted to bringing in foreign mercenaries during that period.
Speaking on Channels Television on Monday, Thompson said Nigeria’s political history contains unresolved issues that continue to affect the country’s security and electoral environment.
“There are people who have come out openly from northern Nigeria who were part of his party then who established that they brought in troops, mercenaries to effectively establish what he believed was a grievance,” he said.
Thompson argued that allegations of political violence, external interference and insecurity should be thoroughly examined to strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process and prevent similar occurrences in future elections.
He also urged political leaders, security agencies and citizens to promote peaceful political participation through dialogue, accountability and respect for democratic principles.
