Senator Abdulfatai Buhari, who represents Oyo North Senatorial District, has described his emotional encounter with victims rescued from captivity in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, saying the survival of a one-year, seven-month-old child left him astonished.
Speaking during an interview with Channels Television on Monday, July 13, 2026, Buhari reflected on the rescue operation that freed abducted schoolchildren, teachers and other victims. He praised the security operatives involved, describing the mission as a significant success against kidnapping in the state.
Recalling his visit with the survivors, the senator said, “It was really pathetic, particularly the woman with the one-year, seven-month-old baby. I was shocked; I still can’t fathom how that boy survived.”
Buhari said meeting the victims revealed the severe hardship they endured in captivity, particularly women and children. While welcoming the successful rescue, he stressed that many survivors would require continued care, counselling and psychological support to recover from the trauma.
He also urged security agencies to sustain efforts to combat kidnapping and strengthen protection for schools and vulnerable communities following the abduction that had sparked widespread concern across Oyo State.
