Political commentator Abdullahi Dan Azumi has attributed Nigeria’s rising insecurity to the widening economic gap between the rich and the poor, arguing that inequality has created conditions that encourage crime and kidnapping.
Speaking during an interview on Trust TV, Dan Azumi said the country’s economic challenges are closely linked to its security problems.
“The widening gap between the rich and the poor has created the conditions that allow crime and kidnapping to flourish,” he said, adding that growing inequality has contributed to the increase in criminal activities across the country.
According to him, many wealthy Nigerians now rely on high fences, security guards, electric gates, barbed wire and other protective measures, reflecting the level of insecurity in society.
Dan Azumi argued that people excluded from economic opportunities may turn to crime because they believe the state has failed to provide legitimate means of survival. He described kidnapping as one of the most profitable crimes, saying criminal groups exploit vulnerable victims and weak state responses.
He maintained that tackling insecurity requires addressing poverty and inequality through policies that expand economic opportunities, improve living conditions and rebuild public confidence in government institutions.:::
