Former Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has shared a humorous personal encounter with late former President Muhammadu Buhari during the one-year remembrance of the former Nigerian leader.
According to TheCable on Monday, July 13, 2026, Mohammed recalled that after the 2013 political merger, he frequently accompanied Bola Ahmed Tinubu to visit Buhari in Kaduna. Because many of the meetings fell on Mondays or Thursdays, he often declined invitations to eat as he was observing voluntary fasts.
Mohammed said Buhari eventually asked Tinubu whether he refused to eat because he did not trust him. Tinubu reportedly explained that Mohammed regularly fasted on Mondays and Thursdays.
Recounting the exchange, Mohammed said, “A few weeks later, President Muhammadu Buhari called me to his room and said, ‘Lai, tell me the truth, how many people have you killed?’ And I said, ‘Your Excellency, I’ve never killed anybody.’ And he said, ‘So why do you fast every day?'”
