Senator Orji Kalu, who represents Abia North Senatorial District, has defended President Bola Tinubu’s support for the creation of state police, saying the proposal is intended to strengthen security rather than influence the 2027 general election.
According to a Punch report published on Monday, July 13, 2026, Kalu said the President supports state police because of growing insecurity and believes strengthening security structures at the state level will better protect lives and property.
“Well, I want to correct one impression. President Tinubu is not making this law because of the 2027 election. President Tinubu is anxious about this law because, from what he explained to us and to me, he’s concerned about the safety of Nigerian people,” Kalu said.
The former Abia State governor explained that establishing state police would require constitutional amendments, as the current Constitution recognises only the Nigeria Police Force. He said the proposed changes must first be approved by state Houses of Assembly before the National Assembly can amend the Police Act.
Kalu added that the legislation would define the structure, funding, operational guidelines, appointment process and the powers of governors over state police operations.:::
