Public affairs expert and political scientist Prof. Jibrin Ibrahim has expressed concern over Nigeria’s political climate ahead of the 2027 general elections, alleging that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is determined to secure a second term at the expense of democratic principles.
Speaking during an interview with SYMFONI, Ibrahim said the country’s democratic space is shrinking and warned of what he described as growing authoritarian tendencies.
“President Tinubu is determined to get a second term through any means possible, and that’s worrying,” Ibrahim said.
He argued that recent developments, including the treatment of government critics and opposition figures, have heightened concerns among civil society groups and democracy advocates.
According to Ibrahim, public confidence in the electoral process could be undermined if democratic governance departs from the rule of law, weakens independent institutions and fails to protect civil liberties.
He also criticised what he described as an increasingly powerful executive branch, alleging that political interests appear to be taking precedence over constitutional safeguards in public decision-making.
Ibrahim stressed that the judiciary must remain independent, saying the courts play a critical role in safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy and should resist any attempts to compromise their credibility.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s history, he noted that citizens had previously united to oppose military rule, adding that the country’s democratic progress was achieved through years of struggle and should not be reversed.
The political scientist urged citizens, civil society organisations and democratic institutions to work together to ensure future elections remain free, fair and credible.
He also called on political leaders to avoid actions that could heighten political tensions, urging them to prioritise transparency, accountability and respect for the rule of law.
According to Ibrahim, protecting democratic values and ensuring public institutions operate independently will strengthen Nigeria’s democracy and allow all political actors to participate freely and without fear.
