Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has called for an investigation into allegations that the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, was involved in the diversion of N54 billion in oil and gas royalty payments from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).
Atiku’s reaction was contained in a statement released on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, by his media aide, Paul Ibe, through the former vice president’s official X account.
In the statement, Atiku expressed concern over what he described as rising corruption under the current administration, arguing that the allegations should not be ignored and that anyone implicated should be subjected to a thorough and impartial investigation.
He said the government could not credibly claim to be fighting corruption while prosecuting opposition figures and failing to address allegations involving its own officials.
“This level of corruption is unprecedented, and the government can’t pretend to be prosecuting opposition figures for corruption while corruption is growing like weed under its own nose,” Atiku said.
The former vice president maintained that the allegations against the President’s Chief of Staff deserve transparent scrutiny to ensure accountability and strengthen public confidence in the country’s anti-corruption efforts.
As of the time of reporting, the allegations had not been independently verified, and there was no official response from Femi Gbajabiamila or the Federal Government regarding Atiku’s statement.
