National President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, has said his rise to the leadership of the union was the result of years of hard work, practical experience, and dedication rather than formal education.
Speaking at the unveiling of Islamic musician Hafsat Adegoke’s new album and 50th birthday celebration in Alausa, Lagos, Akinsanya reflected on his early life and journey within the transport sector.
According to him, he began working as a bus conductor while growing up and used his earnings to support his mother financially. He recalled that despite the family’s economic challenges, he was able to contribute to the household and still enjoy simple recreational activities during his youth.
The NURTW president stressed that his position was earned through years of learning and experience within the transport industry. He said he started from the grassroots, gained practical knowledge of the work, and gradually advanced to become the union’s national leader.
Akinsanya argued that real-life experience, discipline, and perseverance can be as valuable as formal education. While acknowledging that he did not attend higher education, he maintained that his practical knowledge and understanding have helped shape his leadership and decision-making.
“I didn’t enter the NURTW as a bastard. I learnt the work, mastered it and got to where I am today. I didn’t go to school, but the knowledge and understanding I have in my head are greater than those held by people with degrees,” he said.
He encouraged people to remain committed to learning, working hard, and developing their skills, saying success is achievable regardless of one’s educational background.
