New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) chieftain Buba Galadima has defended political cooperation between Northern Nigeria and the Southeast, describing it as a longstanding feature of the country’s political history.
Speaking during an interview on Arise TV, Galadima said alliances between the two regions predate many of today’s politicians, citing the Obi-Kwankwaso partnership as part of a historical pattern rather than a new political development.
“The alliance between the Southeast and the North is older than many politicians active today,” he said.
Galadima pointed to collaborations involving Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe and Ahmadu Bello as examples of cross-regional partnerships that helped shape Nigeria’s political development before and after independence.
He argued that criticism of current cooperation between the North and the Southeast overlooks historical realities, maintaining that political alliances across regional lines have always existed. According to him, today’s leaders should emulate earlier generations that prioritised national interest over regional differences.
Galadima added that cooperation among Nigeria’s regions remains essential for stable governance and national development, stressing that political partnerships should be assessed by their objectives and ability to address national challenges rather than by regional identities.
