The deaths of two U.S. service members and the disappearance of another could increase political pressure on the Trump administration over its military campaign against Iran, according to Al Jazeera correspondent Patty Culhane.
Speaking in a video posted by Al Jazeera on Sunday, July 19, 2026, Culhane said the casualties came amid escalating exchanges of strikes between the United States and Iran. She noted that both the House and Senate had passed a War Powers Resolution seeking congressional approval for further military action against Iran, although she described its enforcement mechanism as limited.
“As the week gets underway now, especially with two new service members dead, one still missing, it’ll be interesting to see if pressure increases from members of Congress and the American people,” Culhane said.
She also highlighted President Donald Trump’s mixed messaging on the conflict, including his remark that he “couldn’t care less” if Iran abandoned the memorandum of understanding between the two countries.
Culhane added that rising fuel prices following the resumption of hostilities could intensify political pressure on the administration ahead of congressional elections, as fighting between the U.S. and Iran continues to escalate across the Middle East.
