Elder statesman and former Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) National Secretary, Dr. Usman Bugaje, has criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, arguing that public dissatisfaction with its performance could influence future elections.
Speaking in an interview on Symfoni TV on Sunday, July 19, 2026, Bugaje said, “I don’t think defeating him is a problem; he has already defeated himself in a democracy,” suggesting that voters would ultimately judge the administration based on its record.
Bugaje cited concerns over the economy, insecurity and the rising cost of living, maintaining that democratic governments are assessed by their ability to improve citizens’ welfare and provide effective leadership.
He also expressed concern about what he described as increasing pressure on democratic institutions and opposition politics, arguing that democracy thrives when parties compete freely on ideas, policies and respect for the rule of law.
The former ACN national secretary urged government officials to focus on addressing the country’s pressing challenges, saying public confidence can only be rebuilt through accountability, transparent governance and policies that produce tangible improvements in the lives of Nigerians.
