Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has apologised to the Igbo community for the role played by people from Plateau State during the Nigerian Civil War, describing the move as a step toward reconciliation, healing, and stronger inter-ethnic relations.
Mutfwang made the remarks while hosting representatives of the Igbo community from all 17 local government areas of Plateau State at the Government House in Jos. The meeting focused on promoting peace, unity, and cooperation between the Igbo community and the people of Plateau State.
The governor said it was important to acknowledge the painful legacy of the civil war to foster healing and mutual understanding. He noted that those who participated in the conflict acted under the leadership and circumstances of the time, urging the present generation to embrace unity rather than remain divided by history.
Mutfwang also praised the Igbo community for its contributions to commerce and entrepreneurship, encouraging greater investment in Plateau State and urging Igbo business owners to employ and mentor young Plateau indigenes.
“I apologise to the Igbos. We were deceived into going to war, and we regret it. No ethnic group has demonstrated the entrepreneurial spirit more than the Igbo,” the governor said.
